Leiden-Sarin Moot Court

A Moot Court is a competition for legal educational purposes. The Leiden-Sarin International Air Law Moot Court, which is a joint effort by the Sarin Memorial Legal Aid Foundation from India and the International Institute of Air and Space Law of Leiden University in the Netherlands, centres on a contentious, fictitious and current international air law case. Past examples have involved criminal law for unruly passengers and the legality of overflight charges for commercial passenger operations.

The competition is separated into a written memorials stage and an oral pleadings stage. During the written memorials stage, the students prepare a memorial on behalf of the applicant and the respondent, based on the fictitious case. This involves detailed and extensive legal research and fact analysis both individually and within the team.

The oral pleadings stage consists of pleading the case in front of expert judges during simulated trial rounds against other teams from various universities around the world. The preparation for the oral rounds includes video analysis and intensive language training. This will allow the students to improve their language skills and their confidence in presenting. In order to achieve this purpose many practice pleadings will be held in front of professors, lawyers and practitioners.

Each year the competition takes place in different cities around the world with past examples being in Malta, Jakarta and Beijing. In addition to universities, the competition is attended by numerous professionals in the international air law field which provides students with the opportunity to improve their professional network.

During the complete competition the participating students will be coached by the Institute of Air Law, Space Law and Cyber Law/ Chair for Public International Law, European Law and International and European Economic Law.
